Questions Customers Ask – 1. Who Are You?

In this first installment of uestions Customers Ask, we’re going to start off with what is probably the most basic one, “Who are you?”

Now, they don’t just come out and say it in those words. Sometimes they say it in words that aren’t so kind and can’t be reprinted here. Basically, these people are

questioning you as a person and as a marketer. They want to know if you are really qualified to give them the assistance that they need. They want to know what your credentials are. After all, there are a lot of crooks out there and one can’t be too careful.

So what do you tell these people?

For me, this is easy. I tell them the truth. But I don’t just tell them the truth as it is now. I tell them the whole story about me. I tell them how, when I first started out online, I was totally clueless. I didn’t know what I was doing and I couldn’t make a dime doing anything. I tell them how long it took me before I started to figure this Internet marketing thing out.

In other words, I make myself look human. So many people look at gurus or successful people online as something short of human, like we were born rich or something. They don’t realize that we were, at one time, just as broke as they are. They don’t see the human side of us. It is our responsibility to show them that side.

Now, what if you were always successful? What if you came from a sales background in the offline world and took it online? Fine, tell them that. They’ll probably have a great deal of respect for you seeing as that you did have a formal background in sales and that may be why you’re qualified to help them.

I have my whole story written out in a Word Doc. If anybody wants to know who I am, I send it to them, either as an attachment, or if they can’t open the attachment, directly in the email itself. This way they can read up about me.

So yes, I am going to anticipate your question. Write up a bio. Don’t leave anything out. Include the good and the bad. The failures in your life will only make you look more human to your customers. If they see that you’ve made mistakes but have learned from them, they are more likely to trust you.

One thing you must NEVER do is lie. Don’t try to make yourself more than what you are. Trust me, people will find out and then when they do, they will spread the word about you and your reputation will be shot. Be honest and your customers will respect you for it.

In our next installment, I’m going to go over a question that I probably get asked more than any other. As a matter of fact, I get this question asked so much, I have the answer pasted in another Word Doc so I can just copy and paste it into the email reply.

See you next time
