The Way Women Do BusinessCopyright Nancy Johnson 2003 all rights reserved. There is no doubt about it, women are different then men, in lots of ways but I think networking is one that really sets us apart, sure men network but women tend to build relationships, circles of friend, peer groups, and communities. Men build teams, partnerships, but they may not share the way women do. Let's face it women like to talk, we are better communicators then men, ever try to have a meaningful conversation with your husband, on most topics about your business? Unless it is something that they are into gathering, meaningful advice on your business for many of them is often an exercise in pointlessness. Most men are not talkers, and if they are anything like my husband the fewer words the better. "Is this going to cost me money? No? Ok then do what you want." Is the bottom line in my house! Women in business like to talk, in brainstorming chats we have held it is sometimes hard to keep up because the chat room is a buzz with two or three conversations at once. That is how I have picked up some great ideas, or seen others reach an "ahha" sort of moment. Maybe it is as women we do like to share our finds and refer others, from the newest gadgets or downloads, to groups that are working for us. We are also usually not afraid to try new things in developing our business, not hung up on it is my way or the highway. I believe if something isn't working for us we are more adaptable to switching gears quickly and doing something different, if someone gives us a great idea to try. Men may have more of a problem admitting what they are doing is wrong and therefore slower to switch to something that is new and different. We tend to ask questions when we are not sure, or god forbid ask directions. Many men don't like asking questions for fear they might appear ignorant. Most of the time you will find groups willing to listen to someone as they vent about a customer, or a project that is giving them fits. We tend to cheerlead for one another, and even across the internet you can usually tell how someone is feeling. We are more nurturing to others, giving each other a shoulder to lean on when we see someone in one of our groups in need. Three ways women networking we see as vital to helping grow a business are: 1. Joining communities and organizations, places where we can gather, offer our businesses and share ideas, insights, resources, and come together as women in business. 2. Joining forces, by linking up we expand our business. This can be simple link exchanges, offering commissions to others to help sell our products or services, to forming partnership or joint ventures. Even volunteering your expertise on boards or forums. 3. Making a commitment to do business together whenever we can. By doing business with other women owned businesses, we help them grow, which helps the local communities grow, which helps our nation grow. By buying products and service from other small businesses we all help the economy and help other families reach financial soundness. Women are just doing what come naturally for them in growing business. One small business on the internet is like a drop in the ocean, by connecting up with others, we become a force. We are seeing a paradigm shift more and more - women who once left home to enter the work force are now leaving the work force and starting their own businesses. From main street to the internet, our numbers are growing, and networking is the vehicle that more and more women are coming to understand can become a driving force to helping a business grow. ================================ Nancy Johnson has been a leader at various women's communities online since 1999.
